Neurofibromatosis type 2

Published on June 4, 2016

History: 15-year-old woman with hearing loss

Findings: Axial and coronal postcontrast T1-weighted MR images demonstrate enhancing masses within both auditory canals that extend into the cerebellopontine angles.

The brainstem is displaced to the right. Also note the enhancing mass within Meckel’s cave on the left (original pics not shown).

Dx: I thought it is Cerebellopontine angle meningioma, but it is –  neurofibromatosis type 2

Neurofibromatosis type 2 (NF2) is a hereditary condition most commonly associated with bilateral vestibular schwannomas, also known as acoustic neuromas. These are benign (noncancerous) tumors that occur on the nerves for balance leading to the inner ear.
